Williamson County/YMCA Teen Court orientation on August 20, 2016, at the Twin Lakes YMCA. The day will be filled with games, food, giveaways, t-shirts, and important training to prepare them for their duties as participants of Teen Court. Students learn the roles of bailiff, attorney, juror, clerk and judge. Teen Court sentences those juveniles between the ages of 10 and 17. This hands-on experience builds confidence and speaking skills while having fun and learning about the criminal justice system.

The Teen Court program is open to all students ages 13 to 18. The orientation will begin at 9:00 am and end at 2:00 pm. Students will learn about the Teen Court program through hands-on activities, guest speakers and thought-provoking training and team building exercises. Pre-registration is requested but not required. Students may register at the door. Dress is casual or modest.

Judge Edna Staudt partnered with the YMCA in 1996 to form the first Williamson County Teen Court.  Patricia Cofty is the volunteer staff attorney who has worked with the program for the past ten years, teaching students the roles of the attorneys, legal theory, and courtroom procedure.  Hundreds of students have benefited from this Leadership Program. Students from any school can participate.  Further, the juvenile defendants that participate as a condition of their court order have found this group of students to be inspiring and fair. The Justice of the Peace in each county were given the authority to issue an Occupational Driver License (ODL) for those who have had their driver license suspended by the Department of Public Safety through the Driver Responsibility Program, commonly known as the Surcharge Program. There is a $41.00 fee.   Information and forms necessary to obtain the ODL are available online at this site.

The Legislature made this change in the law due to the unexpected negative consequences of the program.  Because of the surcharge program, the Department of Public Safety has suspended the driver’s license of over 1.3 million Texas citizens.

Judge Staudt is originally from Austin, married with six children and nine grandchildren.  Her desire to serve the families of Williamson County led her to run for office in 1994.  She has served diligently since that time.  In addition, she has served on numerous boards, including the Williamson County Jail Bond Board, Child Fatality Review Team, Safe and Drug Free Schools Committee, Agape Pregnancy Resource Center, YMCA of Twin Lakes, Central Texas Justice of the Peace and Constable Association, and Hope Connections Pregnancy Resource Center of Leander.  She is also an active member of the Chamber of Commerce in Cedar Park, Leander, and Liberty Hill.  She and her husband assist with music at the Williamson County Cowboy Church.

She partnered with the Greater Williamson County /YMCA  in 1997 to create the first Teen Court program in Williamson County that serves any student willing to learn the Judicial System. This leadership program has provided defendants the opportunity to keep their criminal record clear of convictions.
